Bethune sits on Highway 11, the Louis Riel Trail, about 56 kilometres north-west of Regina. The village takes its name from C.B. Bethune, the engineer on the first train to travel the railway through here in 1887.
A post office opened under the name Bethune, Assiniboia, North-West Territories, on 5 June 1905, three months before Saskatchewan became a province. Bethune incorporated as a village on 2 August 1912.
Today the village is known for McLean Park on its outskirts, with a skating rink, curling rink, school, playground splash pad and four baseball diamonds. The Bethune Bulldogs play senior men's hockey in the Highway Hockey League. The Gillis Blakley Bethune and District Heritage Museum is a Municipal Heritage Property on the Canadian Register of Historic Places. North of town, the Arm River valley has camping sites, and Buffalo Pound Provincial Park is nearby.
